THE BASECAMP

Several main and simple activities might thrill and exhaust you down during the 24th Midyear Fedclimb and President’s Meeting, but nothing compares to a relaxing basecamp. We know that before arriving in Tarlac, you’re probably thinking what the basecamp looks like. You’re mind flooding you with questions like “Is it hot at the basecamp?”, Can I hang my hammock there and just have a relaxing siesta?”, “Are there any stores where I can buy food and some basic necessities?”, “How much alcohol can I take this time?”

Okay, okay… yes, we are mountaineers and this type of wishful thinking is only common, however considered bonus if you are in a federation climb.

The basecamp is actually inside the expansive Tarlac Eco-Park in the municipality of San Jose. It doesn’t have a hotel or room accommodations but the place is very much perfect for camping. The basecamp has lots of trees where you can tie that hammock. There are pocket gazebos, table and benches.

The basecamp has water and bathroom facilities, and nipa stores selling drinks, snacks, rice, viands and some very basic provisions. Make sure to charge your cellphone and bring spare battery, though there is electricity in the basecamp, the facilities for charging cellphones are very limited.

HOW TO GO TO THE BASECAMP

From Five Star Bus Cubao EDSA terminal or Five Star Bus Pasay terminal (near Winston Lodge Pasay EDSA), take Tarlac/Dagupan/Bolinao bound buses.

Get off at Capas, Tarlac junction. Transportation from junction to basecamp will be provided (pls see schedule of free transport). Bus ride to Capas junction will take 2 hours depending on traffic condition. Capas Junction has fastfood chains such as Chowking and McDo, and various grocery stores; you can have your last minute shopping there.

MOUNTAIN BIKE CROSS-COUNTRY TRAILS

Trail A

Starting from the Eco-park admin building parking lot, this route proceeds uphill through the park’s gravel road. The route then enters a single track on the left side which initially follows a descent then a moderate ascent. The trail is overgrown and may require riders to dismount at some points to overcome obstacles. The route ends at the dirt road near the admin building. The whole loop is only roughly 2 kilometers. This route is recommended for novice riders, riding time is 10 to 20 minutes. Riders may use this route for warm ups and practicing riding technique.

Trail B

The bike trail starts with a short downhill road section from the Eco-park admin building parking lot. The route turns left into a hard packed dirt road. The trail winds over roughly four kilometers of uphill and downhill sections, each gaining or losing about 50 meters of elevation. The turnaround point is at a goat farm where riders can rest, drink refreshments and refill water bottles. The return route goes through the same road in the opposite direction ending at the Eco-camp. This route is recommended for beginner and intermediate trail riders and takes only 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Trail C

The third trail is an extension of trail B that goes through a more challenging single track. This short loop adds 3 kilometers to trail B but requires dismounting at one point to cross a stream. Expect narrow, muddy trails on this section of the ride. Total distance including trail B is 13 kilometers back and forth.

Trail D

Starting from base camp, the trail follows the cement road downhill then enters a dirt road to the left followed by more downhill then flat sections. The ride is two or three hours of biking on dirt and paved roads heading towards the San Pedro area. The return leg is a steep and strenuous uphill back to the base camp. If conditions permit, the lead biker may add some trail sections to this route.
